The state golf championships for boys and girls were held over the last two weeks, with many local teams and athletes bringing home awards from Austin.
Girls
The Mason and Garden City girls successfully defended their state titles, with the Cowgirls prolonging their streak of state championships to four consecutive years.
Mason secured the Class 2A championship title with a total score of 664, which was an impressive 72 strokes ahead of the second-place finisher, Spearman.
Junior Ainsley Burns secured the top spot individually for the third consecutive year. Her cumulative score was 140 points, including an outstanding second-day performance of 68.
Members of Mason’s team also consisted of Ruby Hills (164), Bronwyn Underwood (166), Caitlin McCrea (201), and Anna Whitworth (204).
Sonora secured third place in Class 2A with a total score of 739. Gentri Trainer was the top performer for the Lady Broncos.

With a score of 169, other members of the Lady Bronco squad who participated in the bronze medal team include Madison Galindo with 186, Brailyn Galindo with 191, Lynden Cearley with 197, and Rylie Thorp also scoring 197.
Garden City protected its state title at the Class 1A state championships held at Crystal Falls Golf Club in Leander over two days, clinching victory with a total score of 774, which was 14 strokes better than Utopia’s tally.
Rylie Wood paved the path for the Lady Kats with an overall third-place finish and a cumulative score of 164 over two days. Following closely were Keegan Batla (174), Helen Marshall (211), Joslyn Halfmann (225), and Gracie Raney (246), who completed the team’s scoring for Garden City.
Veribest secured seventh place overall with a total score of 838, guided by a score of 10.

Place finish from Kayden Broadway (187). Other finishers for Veribest included Stormie (232), Chloe Day (238), and Bailey Erwin (245).
UIL state boys golf
After a tightly contested first day at the Class 3A tournament where several teams were neck-and-neck for the lead, The Wall’s boys golf squad secured their victory on the second day with an impressive round of 309. This brought their total team score to 613, which was 11 strokes ahead of the runner-ups from Cameron Yoe.
A top-eight performance by Maxwell Wymore at 149 pounds was the highlight for the Hawks, with Stratten Abel at 153 pounds, Kasen Mull at 156 pounds, and Cannon Willard at 169 pounds completing the team’s scoring efforts.
A three-way tie for second place resulted in a playoff where Cameron Yoe secured the silver medal, Pottsboro received the bronze, and Maypearl missed out on the podium finishing fourth.
Following the cancellation of the second day’s events because of rainfall, the Sonora boys successfully retained their Class 2A state championship with a total score of 314.
Weston Fisher’s (71) fourth-place result was the best among the Broncos, succeeded by Dylan Ford (73), Juan Castillo (83), Jayden Welborn (87), and Christian Martinez (93) completing the team’s scorecard.
The Mason boys squad secured the second-highest local placement in Class 2A, coming in seventh with a total of 337 points.
San Saba secured the ninth position with a total of 348 points.
The rain also led to the cancellation of the second day of the Class 1A tournament, where the sole West Texas team was represented by Robert Lee High School. They ultimately secured fifth place with a total score of 366 points.
Brenner Sherwood achieved the best placement among the Steers team members with 83 points. Following closely behind were Jaxon Tavarez (scoring 93 points), Denver O’Dell (with 94 points), Max Garcia (who got 96 points), and Levi Bailey (ending up with 104 points).
Seth Sanford from Irion County achieved the top position among West Texas participants in Class 1A as an individual contender. He secured fourth place with a total of 78 points. Merek Howell from Menard ranked sixthOverall with a score of 79 points.
