In the realm of gardening, this year provided an abundance of inspiration.
The most talked-about exhibit was undoubtedly the one created by renowned British gardening personality Monty Don. This marked the inaugural dog-friendly garden at RHS Chelsea. Working alongside fellow horticulturist and pet enthusiast Jamie Butterworth, they crafted an idyllic space where both dogs and their owners could revel in the surroundings.
In honor of Don’s cherished golden retriever, Ned, the storyline specially acknowledged Her Majesty The Queen’s pet Jack Russell Terriers, Beth and Bluebell, by inscribing their names into the brick path. Additionally, James Middleton, the brother of the Princess of Wales, strolled through the garden with his two Labrador Retrievers, Mabel and Isla—who happen to be part of Ned’s canine family—as they played around.
Don and Butterworth created a blissful, greenery-rich haven designed specifically with garden enthusiasts in mind, particularly focusing on the requirements of their furry companions. Keep reading for four pet-friendly concepts we’re eager to recreate in our own outdoor spaces.
A Refreshing Water Source
The design features a shallow stream where Fido can splash around and cool off on warmer days. The ambient sound of softly running water is a bonus for humans who are enjoying the outdoor space too.
Pathways for Exploring
Weathered brick pathways weave throughout the lush ornamental beds and borders. The paths create vistas through the garden and lead dogs through the landscape as they sniff and explore.
A Space for Relaxing and Playing
At the center of Don and Butterworth’s garden lies an expansive lawn designed for canine activities like fetching, running, and rolling. This deliberately unkempt turf, which includes plants such as dandelions, clovers, and daisies, enhances its durability. The haphazard layout serves as a testament that our lawns do not need to appear flawless to be cherished by our pets.
Places for Shade and Shelter
Trees with multiple trunks provide shade across the grass; aesthetically, they add structure without obstructing sightlines. For shelter from the downpour, a sloping-roof “doghouse” offers ample space for both humans and their four-legged friends.
