Let’s read the following story to learn more.

We need to disassemble the old displays? Alright:)

In 1989, I worked for the planogram team for my local Target.

We assembled/disassembled store displays and fixtures, involving updates to product labels and constructing new display models.

In Feb, we were assigned six weeks of overnight shifts to completely gut and then replace the Home Goods and Furniture, Hardware/Automotive, and Toys departments.

Fortunately, additional help was on the way.

The management assured us additional support would be provided along with ample time to dismantle the large furniture panels and reconstruct them in the home goods section, where bulky exhibit pieces sat atop massive prefabricated shelving units (those familiar with retail work will understand this scenario).

However, when the moment arrived—the team was let down.

Management did NOTHING.

Moreover, our new display plans were supposed to be provided to us prior to beginning work, but they kept being delayed.

Toys and Automotive/Hardware sections were good.

We completed them without additional assistance one day before the deadline.

The home goods and furniture strategies were handed over to my boss when we began our shift, accompanied by a deadline demanding all tasks be completed IN A SINGLE NIGHT, implying:

Taking out the outdated display units, transporting them in containers to the garbage compacter.

Taking out the shelves, including removing the industrial carpet attached to them, then cleaning the shelves prior to their shipment to another store.

And the enumeration continued…

Disassembling the furniture before putting it into the trash compactor to make it simpler to break down inside.

Constructing the new display units for the furniture and setting them up on the fresh flooring areas.

We were promised that we’d have four to six employees help us that night, since a lot of the furniture was heavy bookshelves and desks. We got F— All.

But, their boss was
not
having it.

My boss, Delores, had every right to be upset, and she was.

They left us a note stating all that work needed to be completed during our assigned shift (from 10 PM to 6 AM).

Conveniently, both the GM and other AMs had left for the evening, and no one responded to Delores’s calls.

Dolores was a large lady.

The ex-military veteran stands at an impressive height of 6 feet 2 inches and has a physique as sturdy as a tank.

I had never witnessed her being so furious, or even angry at all, until that evening.

We had only five individuals handling the workload meant for 10-12 people.

That’s when Delores came up with an innovative idea.

I saw Delores ascend onto one of the set pieces, pause for a second, and then, directly facing the surveillance camera, knock over a faux cherry wood side table before leaping back down from the platform.

It broke into multiple fragments. She subsequently crushed these fragments into countless smaller parts.

According to her, what instructions were provided for handling the older display models?

I reviewed the checklist. “According to this, we need to dismantle them and then transport the parts to the compactor for easier compression.”

Delores motioned toward the apartments. “Team, that’s our plan.”

That’s when everything starts getting truly interesting….

Therefore, I ascended and toppled a three-shelf particleboard bookshelf featuring a faux walnut coating. It collapsed horizontally.

I proceeded to jump onto the rear of the case and shattered the particleboard backing.

I proceeded to take my hammer and began breaking apart the sides of the bookshelf. It fell apart immediately.

Over the course of 45 minutes, we scaled each of those display platforms, toppled their displays, and completely demolished everything.

And let’s just say — some memorable moments were created.

It was such an enjoyable time.

It was extremely therapeutic.

We collected the remnants, placed them in two tubs, and set them beside the compactor.

We successfully removed the old displays and installed the new ones.

We couldn’t take off the carpet from the old shelves since it was attached with glue, and we didn’t have any solvents available.

We additionally kept the new displays in their boxes since we didn’t have enough time to assemble them.

Determined to address her grievances, Delores waited for the arrival of the morning shift and proceeded to tear into the individual harshly before departing.

The following day, the group was taken aback.

When I arrived at work that evening, the new furniture had been assembled and the new displays were already set up.

The regional manager reached out to us with an apology after Delores contacted him that same day to inform him about the unrealistic deadline we had been burdened with. In response, they offered us a complimentary pizza dinner as compensation.

I departed from Target after two months and relocated to another state.

Dolores retired after half a year.

Did Delores and company come up with some innovative strategies, or were they supposed to follow the guidelines?

Some Redditors could relate.

Others felt compelled to tell a joke.

The free pizza didn’t make much of an impression on people.

One user was puzzled by the selected subreddit.

This was a delightful story about employees creating memorable moments despite unfavorable conditions.

We really like seeing that.
