On Your Side: Fight Mosquitoes by Tackling Standing Water

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) — Mosquitoes have returned, and specialists offer effective methods for keeping these pests away from your outdoor area.

Specialists recommend using repellents such as citronella candles and tiki torches. Alternatively, devices like bug zappers and mosquito traps are most effective at eliminating ones that come near.

While arranging the items, ensure that the traps and repellents are kept apart from one another. Place the traps along the edges of your yard, and position the citronella candles in areas where you intend to spend time outdoors.

Something else to remember: Mosquitoes are particularly drawn to stagnant water since that’s where they deposit their eggs.

Matt Cowan, who owns Cowan’s Ace Hardware, points out that typical spots where mosquitoes tend to flourish in your yard include flowerpots holding water or small children’s pools.

“Regardless of whether it involves insects or maintaining your home, you aim to direct water away from your house,” explained Cowan. “Any object capable of holding stagnant water has the potential to attract mosquitoes.”

A product that aids in managing standing water is mosquito soaks. These can be placed in the water to eliminate mosquitoes or deter them from breeding there.

For mature mosquitoes, apply an outdoor adulticide in shady and moist locations.
