Cillian Murphy Joins the Cast of ’28 Years Later’ Trilogy

Much debate has surrounded the question of whether Cillian Murphy will return as the survivor Jim in the forthcoming “28 Years Later.” With the movie’s release just around the corner, Director Danny Boyle has now provided us with a clear response to this speculation.

The director states that Murphy will feature in the trilogy based on “28 Years Later,” however, he won’t be appearing in the initial movie set for release on June 20.

Boyle clarified, “We have three movies here—a film trilogy with interconnected characters. The initial pair were filmed consecutively due to logistics, scheduling constraints regarding our actors, and also because it made sense from a narrative standpoint. These films essentially run seamlessly into one another.”

Nia DaCosta helmed the sequel, “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” set for release in cinemas on January 16, 2026.

Cillian Murphy appears in the sequel,” Boyle admitted. “I shouldn’t reveal too many details; I’ll be assassinated if I do.

The appearance of Murphy in the third film apparently hinges solely on one factor: whether the initial movie, “28 Days Later,” achieves sufficient success to warrant a sequel.

Boyle mentioned that there’s a concluding segment… he clarifies it isn’t actually a coda but rather an epilogue or final motif from the closing moments of the first movie, ’28 Days Later,’ which serves as a bridge to the sequel.

While each tale concludes independently, there’s also a transition segment leading into the subsequent movie, making it quite ambitious. We still lack funding for the third installment though.

We’ll see based on how the initial project performs. Fingers crossed, though; if things go well, they might approve funding and greenlight the third installment too. Everyone’s eagerly waiting, including Cillian.

Despite the lack of an official statement, whispers continue that Murphy might be involved in quite a distinct type of project. According to unverified claims, the actor from “Oppenheimer” is considered a top choice to portray the nefarious Voldemort in the new “Harry Potter” remake series.

The rumors have generated sufficient intrigue that even the ex-Voldemort actor, Ralph Fiennes, has endorsed the casting with his approval.

“28 Years Later” hits theaters on June 20, 2025.
