Every year brings slight modifications to living room styles. Think back to the Barbiecore trend from 2023 when hot pink was everywhere—sofas, walls, you name it. Then came the era dominated by farmhouse style in the early to mid-2010s, largely due to the influence of Joanna Gaines and shows like those on HGTV.

Heading into mid-2025, I decided to explore which living room decor styles are becoming less popular and which ones will be trending over the next several months. To gather insights, I reached out to interior decorators from various parts of the nation for their perspectives on emerging and declining designs.
4 Outdated Living Room Styles Heading Out in 2025
Stark Minimalism
Amy McCoy, who founded Ultraplane Spaces, points out that today’s consumers generally aren’t seeking out ultrasparse environments.
McCoy Design Studio
“She notes that stark minimalism is starting to wane in 2025, giving way to a cozier, more intricate style. We’re witnessing a significant move towards warm materials and vibrant furnishings that bring warmth and character to interiors.”
Designer
Molly Miller
“Spacious areas that were too minimalistic are now making room for coziness, comfort, and designs that reflect personal style,” she explains.
Vibrant colors are an excellent method for adding depth to create a richer environment; however, the designers I consulted also recommend embracing playful patterns. Be it florals, stripes, or geometric designs, printed elements significantly enhance your living area. “Playing with patterns is crucial here,” says McCoy, mentioning items like cushions, wallpapers, or upholstered pieces as key components.
Popular Quick-Assembly Furniture and Decor Items
There’s no urgency to consistently revamp your environment to match the newest trends. Classics remain popular for good reasons, so it might be wiser to opt for such enduring pieces both for your house and your finances. As designer states, “Individuals are weary of purchasing fashionable items that break down easily.”
Bradie Fisher
They wish to invest in fewer but more significant matters.
Founder Kathy Koo, designer and head of
Kathy Kuo Home
agrees. “The era of hopping onto each fleeting viral furniture craze is drawing to a close,” according to Kuo. She prefers focusing on enduring decor instead. “I strongly advocate for investing in classic, exquisitely made items rather than cheaper, less durable trends that come and go,” Kuo elaborates. “Constantly revamping your space whenever a new design labeled with some ‘core’ suffix becomes popular isn’t practical.”
Depending Exclusively on “the Big Light”
No living room is finished without a multi-layered lighting plan – as we all avoid switching on the main ceiling fixture so much.
“the big light,”
However, you still require your space to have adequate lighting. This is precisely why incorporating multiple layers of illumination into a living area enhances it significantly, according to Monica Guarnaschelli, who designs for a living.
Indigo Mavens Interior Design Office
“We’re opting for soft wall sconces, incorporating integrated LED lights into built-in features, and adding accent lighting focused on fireplaces and artwork,” she explains.
Overstyled Shelves
A thoughtfully designed bookshelf can be wonderful, yet there’s no necessity for you to go overboard. As designer suggests, “Why opt for excessively styled open shelves filled with unread books and meaningless trinkets?”
Rachel Blindauer
It seems more forced with each passing day. Individuals now desire less but higher-quality items – along with room to exhale. Purposefulness is taking over what used to be about showy fashion choices.
2 Living Room Styles Set to Be Popular in 2025
What’s taking the place of some of the older methods of decoration mentioned earlier? These two trends will increasingly become more prevalent, so keep reading to stay ahead of the design game.
Unexpected Color Pairings
As you venture into vibrant colors and whimsical designs, don’t hesitate to explore unconventional color combinations, Miller advises. She explains, “Color has returned, and striking mixes such as ochre paired with powder blue or dark navy combined with blush and rust can invigorate spaces.”
Designer
Andrea Schumacher
She has also been attracted to “unusual color pairings that aren’t typically found in catalogs.” She elaborates, “I’ve been blending shades such as lavender with mustard, or oxblood with teal – it’s all about crafting environments that pleasantly shock you yet remain profoundly cozy.”
Game Tables
Why venture outside when you can invite your buddies over for an enjoyable night at home? As Guarnaschelli points out, “There’s a growing trend towards incorporating gaming spaces within homes, exemplified by customers requesting specialized tables like those used for Mahjong as part of their interior design.”
The basic folding card table you might have used before isn’t sufficient anymore, she notes, adding that more elaborate options are currently very popular. “These days, we’re looking for high-end game tables with luxurious finishes like burled wood, sharkskin texture, and lacquered surfaces,” she explains.
